Woodland Fantasy

Welcome to this fairy tale-inspired cottage garden. Samantha and Ryan have spent four years creating a whimsical, natural design aesthetic, with a passion for wildlife and sustainable practices.

This is a no turf-grass garden, with an emphasis on food habitats for birds, pollinators, and other insects, as well as an homage to Pacific Northwest native plants. Little goes to waste in this garden, with a design centered around mossy logs, lichen-covered branches, and natural stonework. Playful touches can be found throughout -- bug hotels, varieties of wattle-fence styles, gnome homes, potted bonsai, succulent landscapes, and a chicken coop with, quite possibly, Seattle's most spoiled chickens.

Winding paths carve through free-seeding favorites, like feverfew, nasturtium and honeywort (Cerinthe major). The front garden hosts sun-loving perennials and shrubs that provide cut-flowers, apothecary remedies and kitchen herbs throughout the year. To the south, a weeping redbud and an American crabapple are surrounded by salvia, fuchsia, and columbine, all favored by local hummingbirds, robins, waxwings (and Samantha!).

In the back, beneath the old growth of cherry and cedar trees, winding paths continue with a wide variety of ferns, hellebores, and oxalis. Two ponds, a greenhouse, chicken coop, vegetable garden, and a crumbling wizard tower reclaimed by forest grasses, beesia, and a pink ‘Taylor’ Japanese maple, all combine to create a whimsical fairy garden. Samantha and Ryan hope all visitors leave feeling inspired to unleash their inner child in their own gardens.
