A Tapestry of Inspiration

Eleven years ago James began the transformation that you see here – from tired old lawn surrounded by a cyclone fence – to this vivid tapestry of color and texture, enjoyed by bees, birds and neighbors alike.

This corner garden literally spills out to the sidewalk and surrounding parking strips, with displays of color from February to November. “What started out as a yard of mostly grass has transitioned to mostly flower beds. I have moved and split many plants and rhododendrons while trying to mix colors and find the locations where they grow best. There is not an inch of dirt that I have not touched since I bought the house in 1993,” says James.

His favorite plants are the lilies and penstemons, layered in with a wide variety of perennials, small evergreen shrubs and rhododendrons at the back of the garden. For James, “Anywhere I am standing in my yard is my favorite place. The sound of water in the garden, fresh air, visiting with people walking by, and watching the wildlife makes for enjoyable times in the garden.”
