Wildlife in the Garden by the Sea

The natural environment plays a major role in the living and entertainment experience of this lovely beachside garden.  Passers-by enjoy peeking over the fence, taking in the lush scene inside. From the entry gate, the stream and waterfall draw your attention, passing under pine, maple, rhododendron and huckleberry shrubs. Along the stream, the plants transform from mountainous to jungle-like broad leaf plants. Decorative stones in the stream were collected on many North American river fishing trips. The flowing water and fruit trees attract sparrows and Steller’s jays.

Raised beds in the waterfront garden surround the outdoor dining pavilion at the southwest corner and the observation deck. The gazebo, a garden centerpiece, is surrounded by honeysuckle, rose and salvia. Assertive hummingbirds often investigate people here before feeding on the salvia below. Mediterranean plants like rosemary, thyme, oregano, arugula, and chives thrive by the observation deck. Parsley has free rein to reseed in any available nook or cranny. Russian sage provides a bright blue backdrop for the corner water feature.

Swimming is the main event, both for the home owners and the river otters, who come for the pure enjoyment of a swim in the pool and a nap under the deck. One year a family of ten wild ducks grew to maturity in the pool. Kingfishers, herons and seagulls are regulars along the seawall.

Let all your senses absorb the sights, smells and sounds of this beautiful outdoor space!
